Weekly proof of life: reading | foodstuff | impending appliance shopping (>.<)
Reading: I finished August Clarke's Metal from Heaven (really good, with gorgeous writing) and read Into the Broken Lands, which was my first Tanya Huff book in...probably a couple of decades, honestly. Also really good. (I have a bonus soft spot for her because she was GoH at the local SFF con one year when I went in high school.)
Currently reading: Rebecca Mahoney's The Memory Eater.
Andscruloose and I are close enough to the end of Network Effect that we could probably finish it tonight if we really tried; annoyingly, it's due back at something like 6 PM today, and we can't get it finished by then, so we're gonna have to renew it. >.<
Cooking/Baking: I mentioned having apples we needed to bake with early in the month, and what we wound up going with was the Easiest Ever MOIST Apple Cake from RecipeTin eats, chosen in large part based on our available springform pans. It's tasty (we took the last pieces out to thaw for this evening), but I can't say "moist" is one of the first words it brings to mind. (It's not dry or anything, just...a perfectly pleasantly-textured cake.)
Tonight's dinner plan is Smitten Kitchen's Roast Chicken with Schmaltzy Cabbage. (It calls for a green cabbage and we have a Savoy, but hopefully that'll be okay.) Last weekend when we were out erranding we bought said cabbage, some carrots, and some broccoli (all still in the fridge), and some spring mix (fortunately not still in the fridge), but then we had a HelloFresh box to get through.
Buying vegetables is presumably the first step to actually cooking them, and I made sure to at least mostly choose some that would last a while. >.> The Bee Wilson book I mentioned recently has a section specifically on learning/practicing different cooking techniques with carrots, so I'm hoping to actually make use of the bag of carrots with my own hands. We'll see how that goes.
Householding: The upright freezer in the garage has been making unhappy noises and needing to be poked at periodically to keep it running. Time to get a new one, I guess. >.< Everyone loves appliance shopping!

Slo-Mo Rewatch: Guardian episode 6, part 2

Summary:
Zhao Yunlan returns to Zhou Weiwei and makes her admit the truth: she switched places with Mirror Girl, and that was who was engaged to Ji Xiaobai. Ji Xiaobai, having confirmed what he already knew, isn't interested in a replacement goldfish. Mirror Girl tells the Envoy about a phrase her father used to repeat.
Then Zhao Yunlan and Da Qing talk about Shen Wei being suspicious, break into his flat, find his file on the SID, and have to hide when Shen Wei arrives. Zhao Yunlan sends a smoke messenger to the Regent, and a banner with a spy camera to Shen Wei. Da Qing teases him about his interest in the Envoy. Shen Wei confronts the uni's chancellor about Li Qian withdrawing, and has a brief conversation with Zhao Yunlan. Zhu Jiu puts a new agent in play. Finally, at night, Shen Wei is mugged by two thugs.

This [photo] is nice as well; pretty outfit. I want to buy one for my girlfriend. Where'd you buy it?
I remember from the early days that fandom had decided Zhao Yunlan was talking about the coat Mirror Girl was wearing in the photo, and had related it to the similar trenchcoat Shen Wei wears in later episodes. And that despite the fact that the English subs - all of them: the original ones and the ones that came later, Solo's and the Viki ones - say "shirt"! Of course the Chinese only says 衣服, clothes, and IIRC this concept originally came from the Chinese side of fandom.
Questions:
What's your favourite part in this half of the episode? Do you think Shen Wei is too harsh on Mirror Girl? Do you feel for Ji Xiaobai? for the human Zhou Weiwei? Why is Zhao Yunlan stepping up the investigation into Shen Wei? Do you think the spy camera is warranted? Why does Shen Wei respond to being mugged like that, when he could easily defeat the muggers? Any thoughts about how any of this relates to the novel?

* I realize that the play has a sad ending. I’m not saying I need you to change the canon ending, if you don’t want to disturb canon I’d be very happy to read a missing scene inserted in the middle. But if you’re going past 1593 I would prefer for things to diverge in a happier direction.

Two Loves - Lord Alfred Douglas (Poem)

Optional details: This is a weird one! This poem is famous for coming up in Oscar Wilde’s trial, when he eloquently but unwisely described the nature of “the love that dare not speak its name.” I read the poem and thought “I wanna see them kiss.” Cause let’s be honest, despite one of them being heterosexuality personified, they’re both pretty gay.
They don’t have to kiss, but that’s what inspired me to request this. Also, you can refer to them however you want, I struggled with coming up with the tags. I was thinking Joyous Love/Sighing Love, if you like that, or you can give them real names or just avoid referring to them by name at all. Feel free to tag them differently.
* So, Oscar Wilde’s famous definition of the second Love (available here: https://www.famous-trials.com/wilde/342-wildetestimony) is love between an older man and a younger man (exact ages unspecified). I don’t think there’s anything in the poem itself that implies it means that, as opposed to regular old gayness. It’s cool if you want to reference Wilde’s testimony, but I’d like it clear that the Love that dare not speak its name is homosexuality in general, and not specifically pederasty.
Prompts/stuff I’d be interested to see:
- Their journey (before the events of the poem) from friends (to lovers?) to enemies
- Exploration of Joyous Love’s own shame and why he projects it onto Sighing Love
- Them making up after the poem’s events
- Some explanation of how bisexuality fits into this, lol. Threesome? Maybe they’re all actually bi? Idk.
- Other sexualities? By Wilde’s definition it seems like you might need a separate entity for lesbian love.
- Further expanding of the world. I didn’t add Worldbuilding as a character because I’d like the focus on the two Loves, but I’d definitely be interested in seeing the mythology fleshed out a bit more around them!
- Nonstandard fic structure (e.g. epistolary, poetry, etc)
- Something that blends the real world with the dream garden, like one or both of them being called to testify at Wilde’s trial or something???
- Honestly feel free to play with this, if you feel inspired. I just like the idea of seeing more of them/their relationship and I think I’ll be thrilled with anything that does that.

I watched this homage to British costume drama (and airline safety video!) and was instantly charmed. Feel free to take it anywhere along the crack continuum that you like: is this a strange alternate world in which airplanes were invented much, much earlier? Did the historical characters time-travel forward, or the flight attendants time-travel in reverse? Did a real queen isekai into the filming of an airline safety video and just deal with it with royal aplomb? Why are Anne and George sitting in airline seats in the parlor? (Do they invite the flight attendants to their wedding?) And, the most provoking question of all: how did the Scots get seatbelts on their horses?
Additional DNW for this fandom: don't break up Anne and George! However, any other relationships here are fair game, and I'd be intrigued by something like Scot/flight attendant or Queen/pilot.

I first read Europe in Autumn and Europe at Midnight nearly 10 years ago, when the ""Xian Flu"" was a far-fetched SF imagining and the ""Global War on Terror"" was not nearly so global. I'm re-reading these books now in preparation for reading the rest of the series, and let me just say it's landing rather differently.
The worldbuilding in this series delights and enthralls me! I would love anything about the splinter polities, about the Line, about the Campus or the Community or the Coureurs, on scales small (the discovery of an entrance to the Community) to large (a seemingly-stable country splitting into pieces). Past, present, or future; Europe, or beyond - what happened in Asia? In North America? while all this is happening in Europe? There are intriguing hints that the US has had a civil war, and that Texas has become its own country! The little bits of story with secondary characters hint at lots of things outside the scope of the novels that could be filled in. Or - and I don't know yet if these get answered in the books, but if it doesn't - how does mapping an alternate dimension make it spring into being? What was Mundt's ""trick of topology""?
(Please note that as I write this letter, I've only read the first two books and about half of the third, but I will have read the entire series by Yuletime.)

I enjoyed this costume drama set in the waning days of the Sicilian nobility and the rise of the Kingdom of Italy. I'm specifically looking for a canon-divergence AU here: please give Concetta a happy future. Maybe she runs off with Tancredi to America; maybe she runs off to Paris with Angelica! Maybe she gets married to Bombello after all, and it works out. Or perhaps she finds joy in her stewardship of the Salina estate, somehow, if you want to keep things closer to canon. I'd be intrigued with a crossover with historical RPF of the period, or any appropriate fandom I'm familiar with.

This show gave me vibes of Peaky Blinders set in the late 19th C San Francisco Chinatown Tong Wars, with a generous helping of Game of Thrones. I'd love a story about any of the nominated characters, particularly their backstory or an imagined future after the show (you are welcome to canon-divergence away canon deaths). Some specific things that interest me:
- How Ah Toy and Nellie navigate their romantic relationship (forbidden in multiple ways!)
- Lai's hero-worship of Ah Toy, her silent steadfastness, the way she blossomed at the vineyard
- Hong's ridiculous cheery attitude in the face of a thousand insults and injuries, his matter-of-fact approach to his sexuality
- Wang Chao's careful balancing act at the fulcrum of the warring tongs and the police
- The fraught father-son relationship of Father Jun and Young Jun
Please don't break up canon relationships. Matthew Shardlake Series - C. J. Sansom

I read the first few Shardlake books a few years ago, and then read the rest of them in one fell swoop this summer. I feel like they just got better and better! Heartstone, where we meet Hugh Curteys, was possibly my favorite, because it contains one of my favorite tropes. Which is unfortunately a major spoiler, so I won't talk about it here, but if you've matched on this fandom you can find additional details in my letter.
I'd really love a story about Hugh's new life in Antwerp working in the cloth trade, and I'm fine with it being set with him back in England talking to Shardlake, or epistolary, or just completely about Hugh with no involvement from Shardlake and the other characters. I'm fine with gen, or with him attempting a romance either with a man or a woman (original character) - it's up to you whether it goes well or disastrously, considering his secret and the setting. But please keep things firmly set within the historical context of these books.

This film was so subtly sinister, and the role of Sarah was played superbly. I loved how she had a seductive quality that drew people to her like a moth to a flame, but when she was done with them, her cold indifference was absolutely brutal. I would love to see more of her toying with Charlie, not even for any particular gain, but just because she enjoys it. On a shippy note, there were so many moments in this film where the sexual tension between Charlie and Sarah was almost palpable, and I would love any kind of smut with these two, especially if Sarah's mean about it (e.g. bossing Charlie around, teasing her for being a virgin). I'd also be interested in Sarah spending time with other girls to make Charlie jealous, and this could be in a platonic or a romantic way. I'm interested in receiving French fic for this canon, but English fic is welcome too.

Some sort of convoluted V-shaped love triangle with Tony at the centre would be next-level. If shipfic isn't your jam, I'd love insight into the day-to-day life of running one of the most highly-regarded restaurants in the world; food porn is very much welcome here, as is the minutiae of working in a kitchen. Pre-canon fic that details how Tony came to know Adam and Reece in Paris would be great, as would post-canon fic about life after securing the elusive Michelin Star.

Optional details: This is a weird one! This poem is famous for coming up in Oscar Wilde’s trial, when he eloquently but unwisely described the nature of “the love that dare not speak its name.” I read the poem and thought “I wanna see them kiss.” Cause let’s be honest, despite one of them being heterosexuality personified, they’re both pretty gay.
They don’t have to kiss, but that’s what inspired me to request this. Also, you can refer to them however you want, I struggled with coming up with the tags. I was thinking Joyous Love/Sighing Love, if you like that, or you can give them real names or just avoid referring to them by name at all. Feel free to tag them differently.
* So, Oscar Wilde’s famous definition of the second Love (available here: https://www.famous-trials.com/wilde/342-wildetestimony) is love between an older man and a younger man (exact ages unspecified). I don’t think there’s anything in the poem itself that implies it means that, as opposed to regular old gayness. It’s cool if you want to reference Wilde’s testimony, but I’d like it clear that the Love that dare not speak its name is homosexuality in general, and not specifically pederasty.

I first read Europe in Autumn and Europe at Midnight nearly 10 years ago, when the ""Xian Flu"" was a far-fetched SF imagining and the ""Global War on Terror"" was not nearly so global. I'm re-reading these books now in preparation for reading the rest of the series, and let me just say it's landing rather differently.
The worldbuilding in this series delights and enthralls me! I would love anything about the splinter polities, about the Line, about the Campus or the Community or the Coureurs, on scales small (the discovery of an entrance to the Community) to large (a seemingly-stable country splitting into pieces). Past, present, or future; Europe, or beyond - what happened in Asia? In North America? while all this is happening in Europe? There are intriguing hints that the US has had a civil war, and that Texas has become its own country! The little bits of story with secondary characters hint at lots of things outside the scope of the novels that could be filled in. Or - and I don't know yet if these get answered in the books, but if it doesn't - how does mapping an alternate dimension make it spring into being? What was Mundt's ""trick of topology""?

I read the first few Shardlake books a few years ago, and then read the rest of them in one fell swoop this summer. I feel like they just got better and better! Heartstone, where we meet Hugh Curteys, was possibly my favorite, because it contains one of my favorite tropes. Which is unfortunately a major spoiler, so I won't talk about it here, but if you've matched on this fandom you can find additional details in my letter.
I'd really love a story about Hugh's new life in Antwerp working in the cloth trade, and I'm fine with it being set with him back in England talking to Shardlake, or epistolary, or just completely about Hugh with no involvement from Shardlake and the other characters. In terms of comfort or caretaking, Emma's obviously a great choice too - she's an absolute rock who can handle Bern's no-nonsense needs or Chee's… nonsense lol, and she has the skills needed!

Bern and Chee in particular are on such an even keel with each other that I trust their characterization with each other in a H/C situation—that Chee wouldn't be infantilizing hurt!Bern and Bern wouldn't randomly transform into some kind of nursemaid with hurt!Chee (look, I like her a lil gruff even though she's got a lot of heart). So highlighting that canon balance they come to in the course of their work would be great in this context.
DNW: High focus on racist, gendered or queerphobic violence in whump specifically. It's fine if those things come up in the fic, but if you do go with H/C I'd rather the hurt part not be a hate crime or something

This film was so subtly sinister, and the role of Sarah was played superbly. I loved how she had a seductive quality that drew people to her like a moth to a flame, but when she was done with them, her cold indifference was absolutely brutal. I would love to see more of her toying with Charlie, not even for any particular gain, but just because she enjoys it. On a shippy note, there were so many moments in this film where the sexual tension between Charlie and Sarah was almost palpable, and I would love any kind of smut with these two, especially if Sarah's mean about it (e.g. bossing Charlie around, teasing her for being a virgin). I'd also be interested in Sarah spending time with other girls to make Charlie jealous, and this could be in a platonic or a romantic way. I'm interested in receiving French fic for this canon, but English fic is welcome too.

This film is a surprising delight, and it gave me almost everything I wanted—that is, everything except for a romantic arc for Tony. I'd love to see a version of events where he and Adam become partners in every sense of the word, or perhaps a pre-canon fic that expands on his history with Reece. Some sort of convoluted V-shaped love triangle with Tony at the centre would be next-level. If shipfic isn't your jam, I'd love insight into the day-to-day life of running one of the most highly-regarded restaurants in the world; food porn is very much welcome here, as is the minutiae of working in a kitchen. Pre-canon fic that details how Tony came to know Adam and Reece in Paris would be great, as would post-canon fic about life after securing the elusive Michelin Star.

Characters in romantic/sexual ships should be 16 or older, regardless of the rating of the fanwork.
Fanworks of younger characters in relationships are allowed IF the characters are about equal in age and development AND the fanwork is rated General Audiences or Teen and Up. Mature or Explicit fanworks of underage characters are not permitted. For non-human characters or characters with unusual rates of ageing, please use your best judgement. - We've also added in our policy on AI/LLM content (which was previously announced here). What I'm Doing, uh, Thursday?

Cinder House by Freya Marske. This book was all over the place, like it didn't know what it wanted to be, and that undermined a really interesting take on Cinderella.
The Last Devil to Die (Thursday Murder Club #4) by Richard Osman. Really satisfying.

It's Secret Santa season, so I've been extremely busy shipping orders, doing commissions (carrots!), and making more kickbunnies and such for my shop. I also figured out how to offer Made to Order items, so I started with the calico cat stitch scarf. No takers yet, but it's good to be clear on the process. I went to yarn group Sunday and we had record-breaking turnout, yay! I've also made progress on Rockstar Lestat, though I've also had several setbacks, drat it all, including the yarn I picked for the gold pants not being at all gold enough. I did find a no-id skein that will work instead, but I wish I had a clue what brand it is, much less the colorway. And I decided on an axolotl for niece's xmas, which I've just now finished. Also, after an embarrassingly long search, I found my ziploc of embroidery floss specific to doll making. And the scarf on the left in the icon sold yesterday, yay!
